We have only heard these guys talking in their own language. Do they even know your language? Mind you, I expect they know the language of sharp axe against your neck.

Always bring a good argument to a negotiation. If you don't have one, a sharp are will do!

Great page as always.

I keep wondering how the Clopius manage to put their helmets on with their head spikes in the way. Rocktopus, could you shoe us the back design of the helmets and how it fits with all the bony head spikes? There must be hinges or flaps we don't see here.

I'm assuming "forged in place".

Klopius can move their spikes around at will like a human can move a pointed finger. (notice how in panel 1 the klopius against the wall has his spikes turned to the side. This is how they are able to lie on their back and lean against walls)

They use this as a means of socializing with each other, different movements and gestures with their spikes meaning different expressions. They can also vibrate them slightly and make slight humming sounds with them, which is usually an intimidation tactic used when they want to scare away threats rather than fight them.

They move their spikes into position when putting on their helmets and slide their spikes into the holes in their helmets. Then once it's on, they can relax their spikes back to their default position. It is slightly more difficult for them to put on a helmet than it is for humans because of this, and it takes a few seconds, but is not so inconvenient that it's not worth doing.

And Randulph need a chiropractor or a masser at this point. Healing spells are good but nothing like a pro to push everything back into alignment.

Huh... I wouldn't mind finding out which character offer that service when they ate back in town. With all the adventurers getting hurt and thrown around, it feels like it would be a profitable venture to have a clinic at the Marble Gates. Someone who does all others kinds of healing that are not spells, potions or surgery... there must be someone like that.

Someone exotic and interesting for Coleen to meet.

Question is, who in a medieval fantasy world has the anatomical knowledge for that sort of trade
Oldarmourer 24th Jul 2021, 3:56 AM edit delete reply
Massage and Chiropracty were well advanced before 'modern' medicine was possible, anatomy was pretty well known too given the number of injuries and executions to look at, the only thing really missing was the ability to make antibiotics, although there wsa a knowledge that putting bread on a wound sometimes helped, and there was a whole pharmacy of herbal and other remedies, some ineffective but some quite efficient and many of our 'miracle' drugs are refined extracts of these, ancient physicians didn't usually worry about malpractice suits for trivial things, they usually got a 'well, at least you tried' when the patient was pretty much terminal to start with.
Much of modern medicine is just refinements of what was happening for thousands of years, just with a little asepticness and some purer or more concentrated reagants. Much isn't though and some things that were a death sentence back then are cureable today.

What Oldarmourer said ^^^^

Massage and chiropracty are really old discipline.

As for what kind of character... Humm... how about you could introduce us to new race with some good grip that can wrestle even the sore muscles of an old dwarf? Or perhaps you could use someone from a far off country (I don't want to Asian stereotypes buuut...) that use medicine like this. Part apothecary, part masseur, part acupuncture, part mystism, part drug peddler.

Of course, since this is the Marble Gates, they would probably be a spy or someone send to observe the activities of this mysterious place for their country. Everybody is probably doing it after all.
Oldarmourer 30th Jul 2021, 2:17 AM edit delete reply
Acupuncture on a dwarf would likely involve ten penny nails, a hammer and a couple of pints of Tenpenny beer as well ;)

Just a gun works good enough for Randulf's purposes.
Oldarmourer 24th Jul 2021, 4:00 AM edit delete reply
If I recall correctly, it was also Al Capone who said "run from a knife and rush a gun" and he was correct, knives can only reach so far and I've seen people miss at five feet with a sidearm without even being rattled by someone rushing them. It almost seems like the movies take a few liberites with the way things work ;)
Oldarmourer 24th Jul 2021, 4:07 AM edit delete reply
and if you're within about seven yards of someone with a knife and he decides to rush you, even if you have a gun in your hand you're going to get stabbed, because he can cover that distanced in the time it takes you to react to the movement.
I've done that drill many times and taught it for years and I 'win' less than 25% of the time and even then you could say that it would be a draw at best in the real world due to momentum and the attacker needing to react to being shot counts too, they don't fall over or get thrown back like they do in the movies. If you're issued body armour, wear it !!

I gotta say, I don't think I've ever seen somebody threaten a foe by axepoint. That's gotta be a +Intimidation bonus to the roll.

Now comes the question of whether any of them speak "English" Usually speaking monsters do, but it should be a question.
