Always good to know your dungeoneering partner has not been replaced by a mimic.
Rocktopus 19th Dec 2020, 8:24 PM edit delete reply
lol yup

Though mimics would be exactly the type to dodge revealing personal information that might contradict what people know....

Don't make friends in dungeons!

He seems kind of like an asshole to me.
Rocktopus 19th Dec 2020, 8:25 PM edit delete reply
And you'd probably be right!

No matter how hard you try to be nice, someone is still an asshole to somebody.

Well, it's not as though her attempted friendship roll came up a 1, more like a 4 - still unsuccessful but not an epic fail.
DanMan 19th Dec 2020, 9:31 PM edit delete reply
Bah- with his huge negative modifiers it's going to take natural 20 to succeed on a bonding roll. Fortunately you can try again after a major life event... which in a dungeon is every third room.
Aimless 19th Dec 2020, 11:12 PM edit delete reply
Why even ask him, like this was an obvious outcome. She's too innocent :'(

Gee, I wonder why?

My dude, you need some actual professionalism to pull off the whole coworker thing.

I think he’s coming around!
David Argall 20th Dec 2020, 4:37 AM edit delete reply
He is too modest about his charisma. True, he has a negative modifier, but he has survived the dungeon for decades. That means a lot of his partners have too. A fair number likely didn't,but even so, sticking around with him, even with foul attitude and other flaws, gives a good [adventurer's] chance of dying old and rich. Really, he ought to have several followers.

I wonder about Randulf's old partners... With the flashback at the start plus some high-level (final) boss/es remembering him, could Randulf have survived this long because he was (perhaps unwittingly) used to lure others to their deaths? Maybe he actively tries to repel prospective teammates to keep them alive (& hopes Colleen will get sick of him & leave before he gets her killed).

He doesn't want to talk about it, but in the long term i'm sure we'll see a backview of him one day - when the pictures become b/w ...! ;-)

My bet: Last/Only surviver...?
Scared192 20th Dec 2020, 11:04 AM edit delete reply
Tragic past, i'm sure.

Haven't seen this side of Collen before. I wonder what made her start asking questions of this nature.
Oldarmourer 20th Dec 2020, 6:32 PM edit delete reply
Interesting how she sort of sidles up to him in the first panel
Any other time and it would seem sexy...except Colleen would be acting purely innocently...purely ;)
Charlesw81 21st Dec 2020, 2:08 AM edit delete reply
If his experience is tragically loosing friends in dungeons and grieving for them, it might be understandable that he’s developed a standoffish approach towards the people he takes down to a dungeon.

He expects them to die and him to survive so it’s a defensive mechanism not to get too close.

Perhaps later in the story Randulf confesses to Colleen, and tells her that he wasn't too eager to be a dungueoneer...

...he always wanted to become...

...a LUMBERJACK...!!! :D

"Well, it all started when- PSYCH! You didn't think it would be that easy did you? You have to do my follower quest before I reveal my past, and that doesn't unlock until you do three more main story quests. Sorry lassie, but you'll just have to wait."

At least it's not stuck behind a DLC.

Poor Colleen. Shes too nice, but I guess thats partially why shes so endearing
Some More Chafing 22nd Dec 2020, 11:06 PM edit delete reply
Oh well, not the first time she tried. Maybe he will warm up some other time. Anyway, that's rather an abrasive way to say "I don't want to talk about it".
kyrtuck 23rd Dec 2020, 5:14 AM edit delete reply
Aw, doesn't Ranulf want to be wanted?

Happy Holidays to you all a little bit in advance.

Will we get a Holidays Themed Picture for tomorrow?

It's so obvious why he doesn't want to tell her. He doesn't want to become friends because he lost someone to the dungeon, or to another dungeon dive in the past. It reminds me of the stories my dad would tell about Vietnam. Apparently, he tried not to learn the real names of other soldiers because if someone you just call Tiny dies it doesn't mean much, but if you know their name and where they come from it hurts a Hell of a lot more.

I get the feeling our dwarf friend here drinks enough as it is, and he doesn't want to drink more when he loses another friend.

I'd feel sad for her being used to being s community, first in her village, then in church school, but now hanging out with a walking catalog of negative dwarf stereotypes. But i don't feel sad for her because her relentlessly positive outlook keeps her from feeling down.

On the other hand, she's just 17, plenty of time to become a jaded curmudgeon.
Rocktopus 28th Dec 2020, 5:58 AM edit delete reply
She's actually not a teenager, she's in her early twenties.
