Surprise! Wizard is kind and employs a secretary.
Rocktopus 8th Nov 2019, 4:54 PM edit delete reply
I dunno, bureaucracy can be pretty evil...
Matt 8th Nov 2019, 5:49 PM edit delete reply
Nope. The secretary IS obviously the wizard.
Guest 8th Nov 2019, 6:10 PM edit delete reply
But what if it is the faun that was the wizard, and it is all naught but a test of Colleen?
Sheela 9th Nov 2019, 8:18 AM edit delete reply
That would certainly be par for the course.

As for the secretary, she doesn't come across as either good nor evil … perhaps a necessary evil ?
Also, she didn't turn Colleen away, nor say she couldn't see the wizard, so she gets the benefit of the doubt from me … for now.
Pixel-wiz 8th Nov 2019, 4:57 PM edit delete reply

Big entry hall but quite empty. Build to expect many visitors but nobody comes. With a secretary like that, not that surprising. She look like she eat really sour lemon that she store the acid into her tear ducts so she can spray it at her ennemy. If we follow rule number one, she must be a deadly eldritch guardian in disguise summoned by the head wizard to defend his house.

At least the old wizard don't fall for the trope of having the young and sexy secretary...
Sturzkampf 8th Nov 2019, 8:46 PM edit delete reply
She has to be a white dragon at the very least.
Sheela 10th Nov 2019, 12:50 PM edit delete reply
Maybe she used to be the young and sexy secretary … 50 years ago ?

Wizards may age slowly.
Rocktopus 12th Nov 2019, 6:42 AM edit delete reply
Wizards DO age slowly.
Arch Wizard Aldos is a 126 year old human.
chris-tar 8th Nov 2019, 7:22 PM edit delete reply
Look at that cranky old librarian bitch.. I hate women like that.
Guest 8th Nov 2019, 8:58 PM edit delete reply
Mind your manners, young man! And please remember, this is a library, you must be considerate and keep your voice down. Reading and studying can require concentration and focus!
Leatherhead 8th Nov 2019, 10:52 PM edit delete reply
Come now, she has the terrible job of being the Customer Service/PR department for (arguably) the most important person in the land.

She probably has to turn away hundreds of horrible people a week looking for the Arch wizard to solve some mundane problem that they were too lazy to solve themselves.
Rocktopus 12th Nov 2019, 6:44 AM edit delete reply
Considering Marblegate is a neutral territory that everyone wants, and Aldos is the only reason they don't have it, I'd say she's dealt with her fair share of annoying visitors :)
Guest 10th Nov 2019, 9:13 AM edit delete reply
But why? She hasn't done anything wrong in any way and you already hate her? She isn't even shown to be cranky, the only thing she has done so far is her literal job. I think it's a bit much to call her a bitch already.
Guest 10th Nov 2019, 12:12 PM edit delete reply
Well, to be fair, she did interrupt Colleen. But I do agree that the young man should remember to mind his manners, it is a library after all.
Sturzkampf 8th Nov 2019, 8:45 PM edit delete reply
Wonder if Mr Aldos uses Marblegate Tech to make the room an appropriate reception for whoever walks through the door?
Rocktopus 12th Nov 2019, 6:46 AM edit delete reply
We're in the tower of the most powerful wizard in the world.
All bets are off :)
Anothis 13th Nov 2019, 1:12 AM edit delete reply
^ This! I can not stress this enough. People, THIS is the Wizard who did it.
someone 9th Nov 2019, 12:00 AM edit delete reply
I suddenly understand why the faun preferred to deal with Colleen instead of this severe-looking old lady.
DocMesa 9th Nov 2019, 12:13 AM edit delete reply
If the faun had tried to kiss this lady, they would have never found his body, even after months of searching.

If this wizard is such an important guy, then it's rather reckless of the satyr to farm out his courier duties to the first girl he saw on the streets.
Guest 9th Nov 2019, 1:11 PM edit delete reply
Very good point, though it was probably even more reckless to entrust a satyr with courier duties in the first place. But the sender of the message might well have been a fey as well.

Fey gonna fey.
Sheela 10th Nov 2019, 12:52 PM edit delete reply
Maybe handing the letter to Colleen, so she gets into contact with the Wizard, was the Satyr's *Real* mission to begin with ?
Guest 14th Nov 2019, 5:00 PM edit delete reply
Sheela, good question, that is definitely within the realm of possibility.
Anothis 13th Nov 2019, 1:14 AM edit delete reply
Ehhh Saytrs actually make pretty good messengers, it's what they were originally made for.

Messengers of the gods, mythologically grandchildren to Hermes/Mercury
Guest 14th Nov 2019, 4:59 PM edit delete reply
Anothis, you may have a point; as far as I can quickly skim from Wikipedia (though Wikipedia is of course a very unreliable source), Hermes was the father of Pan as well as the satyrs Pherespondos, Lykos and Pronomos. Though apart from parentage, satyrs still do not quite seem like messengers to me, though that may very likely be due to my own ignorance.

The satyrs have definitely inherited other of Hermes' properties, including trickery and "transgression of boundaries".

The Bureaucracy Dungeon... the deadliest of them all
MajorDZaster 3rd Apr 2020, 9:49 PM edit delete reply
Bureaucracy Dungeon you say?

"I have orders to deliver this data package to friend computer's central terminal."
"Certainly, just head through the door right there."
"Okay, I- wait, the room is ultraviolet! I don't have security clearance for this!
"You have orders to deliver that package. Failure to do so is treason."
"But entering a restricted hallway is treason!"
"I, uh... okay?" (Steps through doorway)
"That area is ultraviolet! You're not cleared for entry!"
pkline5 11th Nov 2019, 12:10 PM edit delete reply
You can almost hear the creaking door and the echoing footfalls. Also, the secretary looks like she has a second job as a librarian
Rocktopus 12th Nov 2019, 6:58 AM edit delete reply
While I was writing the script, I always pictured Miss Lemon from the cartoon Recess when writing her.

That stain glass window... It feels like the colors and the order they are placed mean something. Didn't the few Mages that are present at the Marblegates wear colorful robes that have a predominant color? Like the green Mages we learned about some pages back.
Rocktopus 12th Nov 2019, 6:57 AM edit delete reply
Multicolors and rainbows are common symbols of magic in this world, to represent the diverse and wide-ranging nature of magic.

There ARE Colored Mages in the world though. They are professional magic users who graduated from the Arclight Mages College and who now work in different parts of the world based of their color. Almost all mages are educated in the Arclight College in this world, since they own a monopoly on magic and are authoritarian about not letting the commonfolk get their hands on it.
Matthew 11th Nov 2019, 10:39 PM edit delete reply
Shouldn't Colleen be asked to state her business so that the secretary can decide if the arch wizard Aldos will see her at all?
Rocktopus 12th Nov 2019, 6:53 AM edit delete reply
Assumptions are being made, yup
Let's say she deals with a lot of visitors

In the Xanth novels, the Good Magician Humphrey has a novel solution to people asking for favors: a year’s service in exchange for the solution to your problem. Once you get past three guardian monsters, that is. Really cut down on time wasting idiots.
