I wonder if she is a cleric of the Mechanicus? Can she fix the office printer? Yes, she can. (Slams side of printer and start printing medical forms.)

And so, Colleen is forced to stretch her abilities beyond a mere Cure Light Wounds, and improvise it into a Reverse Rusting. Pretty soon she's gonna hafta develop Cure Fever, Cure Anthrax, Cure Ebola, and Cure Cancer, and on top of that Repair Mechanism, Conjure New Mechanism, Summon Ox Cart, and Summon Robotic Golem. Where will it end? The more she does, the more will be demanded. 'Tis a slippery slope you're on there, Colleen!
HadACookie 23rd Aug 2019, 6:27 PM edit delete reply
She was already shown casting Mending, along with Purify Food and Drink on the same page (or their local equivalents anyway), so that in and of itself shouldn't be a problem.

So something is about to happen. No idea what. A test fake? probably not. The item is cursed or evil? More likely, Our lass could get in lots of trouble for exposing it.

But I wonder if you are not making her powers too rare. After all, she starts out as somebody who has to bum a ride, not able to deal with the gentry. She is starting to look like someone the king would "kidnap" to get into his service.
Guest 24th Aug 2019, 6:36 AM edit delete reply
I imagine that one or more parts of the church will have a say or two reg. any nobles wanting to press her into service for some purpose or another, and that such will make her much less interesting for the nobility. If the church holds at least some power, there must be limits to what it will accept when it comes to making use of the directly manifested and miraculous power of their god (as well as what their god will accept) - though that does also very much depend on the relationship between the church and the nobility as well as its relative power and other aspects, such as on-going wars. The church might be more concerned with spiritual matters and the well-being of the people and not taking sides, and the nobility in general might see the value and benefit of that overall and respect and honor it - though that does also very much depend on the nobility and the church in question.

I am uncertain, but I could also imagine the higher-up nobility of the Green Isles has better access to magical services than the lower nobility, and are also less isolated and more experienced in that regard.

This is correct ;)

The Church of Solus (aka the Highfather, Solus is his original Elven name) has a global hierarchy to it, and it's technically illegal to force members of the church into service (especially if they're chosen to receive the gift). At the very least, you'll upset some very rich and powerful Arch Bishops if you try it ;)

As for Arcane Magic... nobles DO have more access to it than say peasants, but most arcane magic is strictly regulated and controlled by the College of Arclight (the same guys who are ruled by the Arch Wizards, and who own Marblegate and are responsible for making it neutral territory). They're sort of like a "United Nations" of this world. They're very strict and authoritarian about who they give access to magic. They have a monopoly on it and it's very difficult to become a wizard without going through them. And if you break their strict policy on political neutrality, you're cut off from the magic community for life. Rogue wizards who become a problem also have a habit of "disappearing" or "committing suicide".

All in all, in this world, it's difficult for regular people, powerful or not, to get access to magic of any kind. Most wars have little to no magic involved at all.
Blackwing 26th Aug 2019, 5:54 AM edit delete reply
That's the trouble with magic. If you make it too common, then problems become too easy to solve, and those who can't or won't use magic can't compete.

Now I'm curious about how one becomes a mage.

With divine magic, it seems to be a case of a god choosing someone, which is out of anyone else's control. However, does a chosen person have to believe in the god beforehand, or can the gods (at least in theory) choose whomever they want?

In the case of arcane magic, can anyone learn it with the right education and training, or does it also depend on a "spark" that you either have or you don't? Also, does the College actively recruit those with magical potential, or do you need money and/or connections to get in? Is it permissible for a mage to work as a non-partisan civil servant or employee of a political figure, or is that out too?

Depends on the god and the situation, but theoretically, a god can give power to whomever they want. However, the recipient must express some kind of faithfulness to the god or its will. In the case of the Highfather, this is done through prayer, worship, obedience to his commands, and maintaining a sort of active relationship with him (basically, being devoutly religious). A god of violence may only require the recipient to commit violence as an act of worship in exchange for power.

For arcane magic, The main thing is that you have to be extremely intelligent to learn. Arcane magic requires an unbelievable amount of memorization, math, and calculation. Only the intelligent can learn it. Even then, many intelligent people just don't have an instinct for it.

There are other places to learn arcane magic; elves in particularly cling to their magic traditions and refuse to give them up to the ever-encroaching Arclight Mages College. But most people's only opportunity is to get accepted by Arclight.

To get in, you have to apply and be chosen. There's obviously corruption and politics involved, but most people are chosen based on displays of talent, intelligence, and willingness to comply to Arclights strict rules and not become a dissident.

At first I was worried Colleen is going to get huffy about fixing a rusted helmet when people need healing, but as HadACookie points out she was using 'Mending' back in her home village so why not?

That said, it doesn't seem like a great sign that Sir Fionn feels the need to have four(?) armored goons accompanying him to talk to Colleen. That seems a little unnecessary for a friendly conversation. On the other other hand, if you're trying to seize a woman doing holy miracles in the middle of a crowded church then four goons probably isn't *enough*.

Bet the Church is taking a tithe. I'm surprised they haven't made Ms Colleen an Official Attraction yet - or possibly burned her at the stake as a heretic.
HadACookie 24th Aug 2019, 10:40 PM edit delete reply
I think accusing the first person in years to receive the Highfather's Seal of Supernatural Approval of being a heretic might take a little creativity. Not that it can't be done...
